There have been 25 bull markets since the stock market crash of 1929, and the average duration of those advances is 31 months. That means the current bull market is already three times longer than average, one more reason for investors to proceed with caution and for advisors to reassess their clients’ risk tolerance and asset allocations.

Nov 3, 2022Average duration of a bull market = Total duration of all the bull market / Number of bull markets. Total duration of all the bull markets = 57 + 49 + 86 + 50 + 43 + 25 + 31 + 73 + 60 + 33 + 111 + 60 + 126 = 804 months. Average duration of a bull market (in months) = 804/13 = 62 months.
Given the jagged nature of stock prices, we could consider the period between 1982 and 2000 a continuous bull market, even though we did get a pullback in the second half of 1987 of about 30%. That’s not a small amount to give up in 6 months, but did serve as just a bump in the road when you look at the overall trend.

That pre-WWII market cycle was brutal but look at how long the ensuing bull market ran for. And the worst bear market from 1946-1968 was a loss of just 28% in 1961-1962. I probably did some cherry-picking with the start and end dates here but so what. The point remains that longer-term market cycles can go further and last longer than most

The current Bull has gained over 330% during this record run in length, but still trails the Dotcom Bull in size. The Dotcom Bull gained well over 400% on its ridiculous record run.
